For decades, the Labmaster Universal product family has continued to evolve to meet increasingly demanding dimensional metrology requirements. Through expanded measurement capabilities, new accessories, software advancements, and user focused enhancements, the Labmaster Universal Models 175, 1000M, and 1000A have continuously adapted to support a broad range of industries and applications.
2012 – Expansion of Measurement Capabilities
The introduction of the Labmaster Universal 1000A happened, and made it to the top of the line measurement instruments. Utilizing laser-based technology, the instrument combined the functions of several precision measuring systems into a single platform, including gage block comparison, ring gage comparator, thread checking machine, and dimensional measurement applications. This instrument was designed to be paired with Pratt and Whitney's design fixtures for measurements of ball bearings, micrometer heads and small diameter ring gauges.
2014 - Advanced Accessories & Precision Probe
As measurement demands increased, new extended range flat and bi-directional probes were developed for use across the Labmaster Universal product line. Such accessories allowed users to measure larger and oversized components while increasing the versatility of Models 175, 1000M, and 1000A.
Additional accessory developments also enhanced existing fixture capabilities, allowing faster and more accurate measurements. New additions included the Precision Probe Positioner (part# U307602) and V-Clamp (part# U307761) for measuring dial indicators, micrometer spindles, and precision balls. With a fine pitch thread, the Precision Probe Positioner enables highly precise adjustments during inspection processes. When used together with the V-Clamp, the accessories improved setup efficiency while providing more accurate and user-friendly measurement of dial indicators, test indicators, and micrometers.
2017 - Upgrades
Additional accessories were introduced to improve usability and measurement efficiency throughout the Labmaster Universal family. Some of the most notable additions included:
Precision probe positioner: provides rapid repositioning and highly precise adjustments during measurement setup.
Gage block 5-point positioner: designed for rapid and precise positioning of rectangular gage blocks up to one inch in size during five-point calibration procedures.
Table center slot bridge: was introduced to simplify measurement of smaller components and improve accessibility during inspection processes.
Additional enhancements included the Dial Indicator V-Clamp, allowing dial indicators to be mounted quickly for calibration procedures, and the Quick Table Clamp, which is a spring-steel leaf held in place by friction to significantly reduce setup time compared to previous clamp designs.
2018 - User Experience and Performance
Several important upgrades were implemented for the Labmaster Universal Model 175 to improve both functionality and ease of use. New additions included:
Digital table height display: replaced existing display with software-based display, switchable between English and metric which is accessible across users.
Same-side measurement: Special application which requires both fingers to simultaneously move in the same direction. Can be toggled on and off with a switch.
2020 - Improved Fixture Design and Precision
Further accessory development focused on improving setup accuracy and reducing operator effort. Adjustments were made to the Labmaster Universal product line (Models 175, 1000M, and 1000A). Precision Probe Positioner (part# U307602) and V-Clamp (part# U307761), designed for measurements involving dial indicators, micrometer spindles, and precision balls. Users could achieve more repeatable setups and improved measurement accuracy.
2021 - Thread Measurement Capabilities
The Pratt & Whitney Labmaster Universal can measure several attributes of thread gages including the thread lead with the Lead Fixture Assembly (part# U306784). The addition of the Lead Fixture Assembly further strengthened an already broad range of thread measurement applications within the Labmaster platform, which included internal parallel thread pitch and minor diameter measurements, external parallel thread pitch and major diameter measurements, and external National Pipe Tapered (NPT) pitch diameter inspection. It incorporated several advanced design features, including laser interferometer technology, a zero Abbe offset design, and a large measuring table with center position, height, pitch, and yaw controls. Computer controlled precision air-bearing slides and gaging fingers also removed operator-influenced errors.
2026 - Continuing Legacy of Precision
More than three decades after its introduction, the Labmaster Universal Model 175 continues to demonstrate its value across industries requiring high-accuracy dimensional metrology. The instrument remains in use by organizations involved in aerospace, defense, space exploration, and advanced manufacturing applications. From expanded measurement ranges to software integration and advanced accessories, the evolution of the Labmaster Universal demonstrates an ongoing commitment to improving precision measurement technology.
